About This Template

It is intended that you save, then modify the content of this template to create your own unique content. You are not permitted to post the contents you find in this template. It is copyright © Russ Harvey. It is better (and legal) to link to the content. See the conditions for using this template for more information.

Saving This Template

This template is designed to help you get started with a simple one-page site very quickly by copying the template to your computer:

  1. Save the document directly without opening it (instructions below); or
  2. Allow your computer to open the document, then save a copy using that program's save functions.

How to Modify This Template

Modifying the Content

It is not contended that you use the content on this page for your own page. Instead, using the instructions in the next sections, modify the content, including the hidden content, to suit your site.

Replace the text and links you find on this template with your own. You can include images and various text effects including larger sizes, smaller sizes, strong (bold) and emphasis. You might wish to use citation (italics) for publication names. Underlining is not recommended because it can cause confusion to viewers of your site used to having only links underlined.

You can alter the background colour, or place an image there. Remember, not all browsers display HTML code the same way and what looks good on your monitor might not on another person's computer or operating system. Also, download times will vary with the connection speed people have and it will certainly be slower than when you view it on your computer hard drive.

Creating Multiple Pages

Unless you have little to say, you have to add multiple pages to your site or deal with a very long page.

Simply save the template as a new file for each page. I've indicated a series of pages in the sample navigation bar at the top of the page, with Page Two, Page Three and Page Four.

Modifying Titles

Change the title from the current Web Page Template (Replace with your title) to something that makes sense to the content on your page.

If you decide to create a series of pages, be sure to change the title as well as the file name for each page. I'm sure you've seen pages on sites with "New Page 1" as their title. That simply advertises the fact that you didn't take care to do things correctly or didn't understand how to design your site.

For example, you might take create this series of pages:

By renaming this template (and title) to index.html (Home), hobbies.html (My Hobbies), links.html (My Hobby Links) and contact.html (Contacting Me), you could create the needed pages for this small site.

Modifying Links

When you do this, be sure to change the navigation bar's links and titles to correctly reflect your new site.

For the most part, you'll want to use relative links (like those I've used for the sample navigation links at the top of the page) rather than fixed links.

The obvious weakness of fixed links is that you cannot work with the content on your computer (or a CD), particularly if you are editing the contents.

I've used fixed links so that the links back to my reference pages work even after you've downloaded the template to your computer.

Using The Headings Correctly

Headings help to identify important sections of your page and provide a way for people to scan your page quickly for the content they are seeking. Always use headings related to the actual content of the page.

Relative Heading Sizes

The following illustrates the relative sizes of the various headings. The headings decrease in size as the number goes up.

Typical h2 sub-heading

Typical h3 sub-heading

Typical h4 sub-heading

Typical h5 sub-heading
Typical h6 sub-heading

Sizing is relative to both the browser and the resolution of the monitor on which the page is viewed. Modern browsers allow for increase and decrease of relative font sizes and people can configure their browser to view pages according to their preferences.
